High school students look at the government with different eyes

I’ve taught a 10th grade U.S. history course for the past 7 years, and am usually amazed at the blind faith many of my students have in the government and the agenda of most politicians. In the last 60 year, our government has taken on more responsibilities and an increased role in the personal lives of citizens, but to my students, students who were in elementary school during 9/ 11, this is how the world has always been. Though I don’t want to discourage the patriotism of my students, I enjoy studying credibility gaps and Supreme Court cases involving personal freedoms with them. They are excited and intrigued by the information, and have been pretty successful at applying historical examples from class to current events and their experiences at school (like what can be published in the school paper, the dress code, censorship with library materials, etc.)
