The Pentagon Papers still matter because we must continue to remind ourselves that secrets can kill, that people who act in secrecy may make dangerous decisions, that those of us concerned with justice must sometimes take risks to expose ugly truths. Particularly now, when we are inundated with information, much of it trivial and meaningless, we must remember our responsibility to seek out information that matters, to find answers to crucial questions. The Pentagon Papers remind us that we must continue to face the sometimes uncomfortable truths about our government’s actions, or we become complicit in those actions.
