The need to know

Democratic decision-making does not just happen on its own, or even because the Constitution says so. Individuals working for the government choose to abide by the principles laid out by the forefathers, just as some may choose not to. Of course, our system has a series of checks and balances to protect against the very notion that some people might not be acting according to the Constitution, but without individuals like Daniel Ellsberg, our democracy would be a lot less healthy. His story provides a model for generations of future whistleblowers, and adds great value to classroom teaching. Should ‘trust” in government be about blind faith or public approval? Teachers can use the story of Ellsberg to help their students contemplate difficult governmental decisions and think more critically about the decisions they hear about today.
